Sommets 2019 revealed!

September 27th, 2019

Your favorite festival is expanding from 5 to 6 days this year!

We are pleased to announce 5 selected titles: PER ASPERA AD ASTRA, by Franck Dion (France), THE DAWN OF APE, by Mirai Mizue (Japan), L'HEURE DE L'OURS, by Agnès Patron (France), UNCLE THOMAS – ACCOUNTING FOR THE DAYS, by Regina Pessoa (Canada, France, Portugal) and ORGANIC, by Steven Woloshen (Quebec). In addition to the international competition, several other titles will be premiered, including the much anticipated ZERO IMPUNITY, a striking and disturbing animated-documentary on sexual crimes in war zones by Nicolas Blies, Stéphane Blies and Denis Lambert. In a completely different register, the MARONA'S FANTASTIC TALE by Anca Damian tells the touching and engaging story of a dog who remembers her various masters. This co-production (France, Belgium and Romania ) offers a stunning graphic signature thanks to the contribution of the Dutch cartoonist Brecht Evens to the character design.

The Grand Masterclass, staged as a performance, is a signature event of the Sommets. This year’s masterclass will be given by Theodore Ushev, co-presented by the National Film Board of Canada. The artist has directed a major and dizzying film, both personal and universal, THE PHYSICS OF SORROW, recently launched in Toronto and narrated by Xavier Dolan in French and Rossif Sutherland in English. During this masterclass, the filmmaker will share his artistic vision and teach the basics of encaustic painting, a technique developed for the film. It will be a multi-disciplinary performance-class with collaboration of other artists.

The René Jodoin Award, created by the Sommets in 2015, recognizes a distinguished, influential and committed figure in Canadian animation. The composer Robert Marcel Lepage received it last year, following Marcy Page, Steven Woloshen and Jean-Philippe Fauteux. This year’s winner, Francine Desbiens, is one of the founders of the NFB’s French Animation Studio. She has signed a feminist and committed body of work, and has also been sensitive to issues regarding traditions and family relationships. Throughout her career, Francine Desbiens has been involved in a number of projects: she has been a producer, has been active in the union field and has also been involved on the board of directors of the Cinémathèque québécoise.

This year, as part of our partnership with CORUS, the Sommets will pay homage to the Quebec animation series Mouvement Deluxe. Produced by SPORT and directed by Mathieu Handfield, this hilarious web series for adults, which combines stop-motion and animation, is unique. Two of the actors who lend their voice to the characters, Jean-Philippe Baril-Guérard and Pierre-Yves Cardinal, will take part in this surreal happening!

And BIG news this year: BOSWELL brewery will partner with the Sommets to brew a special beer, THE Sommets beer, which will be available during the Festival as well as a selection of Boswell beers!

The Sommets warmly thank its faithful partners, Ministère de la Culture et des Communications du Québec ; Conseil des arts du Canada, Conseil des arts de Montréal, Cinémathèque québécoise, Téléfilm Canada, Bureau des festivals de la Ville de Montréal, The National Film Board of Canada, CORUS, École NAD, Caisse de la culture, Le Devoir, La Fabrique culturelle, Publicité Sauvage, MediaFilm, Cartoon Brew, Panorama cinéma, Festival Stop Motion Montréal, Festival du cinéma de la ville de Québec, Cinéma Moderne, LOJIQ, L’Office franco-québécois pour la jeunesse, L’Alliance Québec Animation, Wikimedia Canada.
