Rock Bottom by María Trénor opens the 23rd Sommets du cinéma d'animation!

April 3rd, 2025

The Sommets du cinéma d'animation are pleased to announce the opening film of their 23rd edition, to be held May 26-31 at the Cinémathèque québécoise. ROCK BOTTOM, by Spanish director María Trénor, who recently won the Director of the Year Award at Cartoon Movie in Bordeaux, will kick off the festivities on Monday, May 26, in a North American premiere.

Selected in the Official Feature Film Competition of the Annecy Festival 2024, ROCK BOTTOM is a tormented love story inspired by the life and work of British rocker Robert Wyatt. The director immerses us into the creative and revolutionary whirlwind of post-hippie culture in the early 70s. Drugs transform a dream summer into a nightmare, as Wyatt's remastered music takes us on a dreamlike journey from desolation to a search for hope. A universal story about the transformative power of art and music.

“Rock Bottom celebrates the career of a legendary rocker while taking us on a journey of sound, color and creative fever. Thanks to this multicolored film, the Sommets will open on a psychedelic note that will inspire festivalgoers”, emphasizes Marco du Blois, artistic director of the festival.

María Trénor has produced and directed several animated shorts, including Exlibris, nominated for Best Animated Short at the 2011 Goya Awards. The filmmaker is also a teacher in Media Studies at the Valencia School of Art and Design. She has contributed to several publications on film and animation in Spain.

The film will be presented in its original English version.
